What's the difference between a GP and a GP assistant?

Just wondering cos when I asked for a doctors appointment they gave me one beside the 'GP assisant' so I'm assuming they can help you near all the mundane things GPs do so how are they different?
ones the monkey and ones the organ grinder
The difference is that one is a general practitioner and one is a standard practitioner assistant....
