What's a righteous bearing to draw from rid of unused medicine?

Due to a series of knee injuries, I own a bunch of unused painkillers in my bathroom cabinet - Lortab, Percoset, Codeine, etc. I'm not entirely sure how to bring back rid of them. I've heard you should flush them, but later they end up within the rivers and streams - and that can't be good. But if I purely throw them away, you never know who may get their hand on them. What's the recommended way to dispose of them?
Funny you ask this, my local word paper simply had an article on how the FDA recommend getting rid of unused pills. You put them in your cat litter, coffee grounds, or undesirable debris and then put them within your regular trash and just throw them away! People are smaller quantity likely to verbs through cat doo doo to get big I suppose. lol
Flushing is best. If you're uncomfortable beside that, pour old motor grease or paint on them (you don't need much) and putt hem surrounded by the trash.
